The Shai Hills Resource Reserve is the closest wildlife park to Accra, covering only 51 square kilometers.
The park may be reached in less than an hour using the Volta Lake Road. The park is well-known for the enormous bands of olive baboons that roam the roadway near it in the mornings and evenings.
The Wildlife Division aims to repair the fence around the park with private sector help so that it can be refilled with species.
Shai Hills, located in the Dangme West District of Ghana's Greater Accra Region, offers a diverse range of fauna, archeological sites, carvings, and granite hills. The distance to Accra is around 50 kilometers.
Shai Hills' vegetation is dry, coastal evergreen savannah, with high hills covered in dry forest accounting for 40% of the park's area. There are many olive baboons, green monkeys, kobs, and bushbucks to observe, as well as monitor lizards, pythons, and snakes.
Nature lovers will also see the Senegal parrot, grey plantain eater, hornbill, red northern bishop, and violet turaco. Other birds that inhabit Shai Hills include Senegal cuckoos, stone partridges, and francolins.
Visitors to Shai Hills and those seeking adventure make a point of visiting any or all of the three caves: Adwuku, Sayu, and Hieweyu. The three caves with various profiles offer a wonderful physical exercise to the visitor, especially those who visit the Adwuku cave to the top to view the vast Accra plains.
